Otis is a Purr Scout

Otis as a Purr Scout

When I joined the Purr Scouts of CLAW, I had to recite the Purr Scout Pledge. This is how it goes:

On my honor, I will try
To be the best Purr Scout
I can be.
I will enjoy and live
Life to the fullest,
And I will always honor
The way of the CLAW.

Next, I got my Purr Scout Emblem and Sash. The picture at the top of the page shows me all dressed up. The Purr Scouts also have a motto. Our motto is: "Purr Scouts are always purrpared!"

I won first prize in the Purr Scouts Webpage competition for my Purr Scouts Page.

In the Purr Scouts we have the opportunity to earn badges.

Adopt a Grandkitty Badge
Valentine Designer Badge
Space Explorer Badge
Camping Badge

Every Purr Scout begins as a Kit Purr Scout. When I had obtained my first three badges, I advanced to the rank of Explorer Purr Scout.Catnip My first three badges are for Catnip Gardening, Hiking and Bird Watching. I learned how to grow catnip - furry useful for us kitties, how to identify different kinds of birds, and how to get the most fun from a Purr Scout Hike as well as important safety tips and hiking techniques. We can sing the Purr Scout song when we go on a hike: Here are the lyrics to the Purr Scouts Song!

Hey! Ho! Away we go! The Purr Scouts on the trail!
Hey! Ho! Here we go! Our friendship never fails!
Hey! Ho! Away we go! So much to do and see!
Hey! Ho! Here we go! The Purr Scouts -- wild and free!

Now I have my first three badges, I have become an Explorer Purr Scout. Here are my certificate and insignia:

I'm taking more badges. For the Mystery badge, I had to write a mystery story. I wrote mine in the form of a poem. You can read it below:

The Tuna Mystery
by
Otis
One day as I was hiking
Following the Purr Scout way,
I found the most exciting scent
Fresh tuna on the air.
I stepped out brisk and smartly,
My tail carried high.
My whiskers twitched in style,
I padded softly down the path
Following the tuna trail.
Where could it be hidden?
I looked this way and that
Underneath some piles of leaves
Just a hedgehog curled up tight.
The smell was so enticing.
Along a path I padded
Squeezed through a tiny door.
There laid out in front of me
Piled high on the floor
Was tuna beyond count.
Enough for all the Purr Scouts
To share a meal today!

Taking my Adopt a Grandkitty Badge was great fun. I was paired up with an older kitty, who is also a member of CLAW. We corresponded by meow-mail and sent each other pictures of ourselves by way of an introduction. Over the weeks we got to know each other well and I found out a little of what it's like to be a grandkitty.

To earn my Valentine Designer badge I had to design and submit a card for the Purr Scouts Valentine card service! Below is the card I designed.

To earn my Purr Scouts Space Exploration Badge I attended the Space Exploration Seminar hosted by CLAW's Fleet Admiral of Cats in Space. This was fascinating, and I learned about such things as the planets in our solar system, space travel, and how important science is to our lives today.

To earn my Purr Scouts Camping Badge I studied the basic camping techniques and activities, so I now know how to have a happy, successful and safe camping trip. I learned how to pitch a tent, build and look after the camp fire, and how to have lots of fun activities with the other Purr Scouts.

To earn my Purr Scouts Ecology Badge I had to choose an environmental problem that exists in my community, neighborhood or my own home and write an essay about it, describing the problem, the causes and possible solutions. I chose air pollution as this is a topic that affects us all.

To earn my Purr Scouts Botany Badge, I learned all about plants and how important they are in sustaining life. I studied the four plant groups and learned which plants are good to eat, like catnip, and which must be treated with caution as they are harmful, like Morning Glory and Poison Ivy!

To earn my Purr Scouts Good Health Badge, I learned how to stay in purrfect shape through exercise and a good diet. The badge also covered how to cope with trips to the vet, how to diagnose and treat some common ailments and the importance of regular vaccinations.

To earn my Purr Scouts First Aid Badge, I learned how to act in an emergency, and what my human should do if anything ever happened to me! This is a furry important badge, as knowing how to act in an emergency could save a kitty's life.

To earn my Purr Scouts Crafts Badge, I had to make a bird feeder and think of a good craft idea that effurykitty could make. My idea for a craft project is a shell paperweight. This is a useful way of using any shells kitties may have collected during seaside holidays over the summer. You will need a large clean flat stone, small shells and pebbles, pollyfilla mixed thickly and varnish. Begin by covering your work surface with old newspapers or plastic to protect it. Then, cover the sides and top of the stone thickly with the Polyfilla mix. Arrange the shells and pebbles over it in a decorative pattern. Leave to dry, then spray or paint with clear varnish. You now have a useful and decorative paperweight.

I have now advanced to the rank of Master Purr Scout.

To achieve this rank, I had to complete ten badges and also a Helping Paws Project.

Helping Paws Award

For my Helping Paws Award, I made a webpage all about the importance of having kitties neutered to help prevent a feline population explosion.
Click paw to find out all about it.

To earn my Christmas Badge, I had to decorate a Christmas tree. You can click here to see it.
